Lesson Plan (grade 11 – advanced) Period 116: Preparation date : 3/4/2008 Unit 14 : Lesson : writing Aims : - By the end of the lesson, the students are able to write a report on a trip or vacation. - By the end of the lesson, the students are able to use different tenses in a report. Lexical items : - float - temple Structures : - It was our first to Asia and we loved it very much Teaching aids: - textbook - handouts - Sheets of paper - chalk and board Techniques : writing-based Procedures : State/time Teacher’s and students’ activities Blackboard Materials 1. warm-up (7’) Games: Name the place - put Ss into small groups, A and B - show SS two pictures of two famous places of a country - Ask SS what country it is - If SS cannot say what country it is, give them cues, one after another, to help them - the first group to name the country wins the game. - Ask SS if they have been to Thailand and where they have been to for a holiday. Transition: William and his friends have been to Thailand and he was telling us about their trip in his report. Today I’ll help you write a report about your holiday. - write down on the board: These are the cues: 1. it’s a country in Southeast Asia 2. It is known as a country of elephants. 3. Pre- writing (6’) Teaching new words: - use pictures and explanations to present some new words - Read the words one by one and ask Sts to repeat. - float (n):cai phao (v) : troi bong benh - temple (n): den, mieu, thanh duong - highly (adv) : cao - appreciated (adj): cam kich, danh gia cao - affectionately (adv) : chan thanh - look forward to : - invite (v) : moi - invitation (n) : loi moi Chalk and board 3. while-writing (20’) Activity 1::complete the report (task a, p.196) - tell SS to work in pairs - Ask them to read the report and complete it by filling in each space with the correct from of a suitable word in the box. - go over the answers with the class. Activity 2: recognizing verb forms - ask SS to underline all the verbs used to report about the trip - ask SS what tenses are used in the report ( expected: the past simple) - elicit from SS other tenses that can be used in reports. ( expected: the past progressive and the past perfect) Activity 3: Guidelines - elicit from SS what to include in a report on a trip and give them some guidelines on the content of the report. Expected answer: 1. summer 2. spent 3. different 4. floating 5. looked 6. famous 7. really 8. went 9. outside 10. great. Guidelines: A report should include the following things: - where and when you took the trip - details of the activities you did and the places you visited - your impression or feelings about what you saw - your impressions or feelings about the trip in general. Post-writing (10’) Peer correction - Ask Sts to work in group of 5, deliver each group 5 pieces of writings and tell them to read and correct their friends’ narratives. - Tell each group to choose the best piece of writing, and the most special story. - Go around to control and give help if necessary. - Call a St. from each group to read their group’s best writing, and ask Sts to give comments.
