Unit12 : Lesson : Speaking

I. Aims :

- By the end of the lesson, the students are able to talk about hobbies.

- By the end of the lesson, the students are able to express preferences .

II. Lexical items :

-would rather -prefer - engrossed

III- Structures :

- I enjoy swimming because it is an excellent way of getting rid of stress.

- I refer reading books to playing sports.

1. warm-up

Games: Spontaneous talks 
-Put the class into groups of four.
- give each group a list of leisure activities. Each activity is written on a piece of paper and then folded so that it cannot be seen.
- Within groups, SS take turns to choose a topic and then talk about it spontaneously for one minute.
- Remind SS that they do not need to care about accuracy.
-After SS have finished their spontaneous talk within groups , elicit which topic they chose, and whether they like doing it in their free time and why.
Suggested leisure activities
( The assigned topic for each group does not need to be the same.)
Swimming , watching videos, watching t TV, surfing the internet, listening to music, collecting stamps , jogging, painting, drawing , making clothes, playing football; reading books,
Transition Today we will learn to talk about leisure activities and your preferences .

Eliciting and introducing Useful language
- talking about likes and dislikes:
- give some practice on the pronunciation of these words and phrases.
Likes and Dislikes

+be interested / engrossed / indulged in sth or doing sth
+ be addicted to in sth or doing sth
Preferences:
+ Prefer to do sth I prefer to listen to music.

I’d rather stay at home and watch TV
Reasons 
+I like collecting stamps because it is both interesting and educational.
+I enjoy swimming as / since / for it is an excellent way of getting rid of stress.

Activity 1:Finding thing in common & differences 
-Tell SS to write one leisure activity they enjoy doing and one they are not interested in down on a piece of paper.
-Get SS to stand up and move around the class to ask questions to find those who have the same interests.
- Give some examples 
T:I enjoy swimming in my free time. Do you?/ what (How ) about you?
S1: Me too./ That’s the same for me. / So do I
S2: Really? / Oh, that’s interesting. / Oh , I’m the opposite. I’d rather read novels.
-Make sure SS use English to communicate.
Activity 2: group discussion
-Based on the conversations in activity 1, group SS who have the same hobbies.
-Ask SS to discuss why they are interested in such things.
- go around to monitor the class and give help if necessary
- call on some group representatives to introduce the hobbies they have in common and report the reasons for such interests.
Listening: 
- Have SS listen to a talk about David’s hobby and complete the sentences below (Appendix )
- Call on SS to give answers.
- invite class opinions and give feedback.
Sentence Making
- have SS make five sentences using would rather, prefer, enjoy, dislike, and engrossed respectively.
Expected answers:
