Unit 11: Lesson : listening

I. Aims :

- By the end of the lesson, the students are able to listen for specific information

- By the end of the lesson, the students are able to understand some sport news.

II. Lexical items :

- sell out - boost - walkout

- dispute - suspension - be rained out

III. Structures :

- a judging dispute caused a walkout that delayed the men’s team final between

- the champion game was also rained out.

Games: visualizing
- Ask SS to work in groups of 5.
- give each group a copy of the pictures
- Ask SS to work out a compound noun or a phrasal verb for each pair of pictures ( a, b, c, d)
- the 1th group to come up with all correct words/ phrases is the winner.
- refer back to the pictures and go over the answers with the class.
- Ask SS to think of how these words are related to sports news, and get them to try producing small pieces of news (short sentences) using such words.
- Transition:
Today we’re going to learn about four pieces of news- and let’s see how much of your stories / sentences is included in the news-. 
- write down on the board :

Teaching new words:
- teach the words through explanations in English and Vietnamese.
- Read the words one by one and ask SS to repeat. 
Checking vocabulary:“slap the board”
- put the words that have been taught into circles on the board.
- call on some SS to go up to the front facing the board.
- call out the words in any order
- SS have to listen and slap on the word each time they hear it.

Activity 1: Main ideas. ( task a, p. 154)
- tell SS they are going to listen to the four recording on sport news
- Ask SS to listen and match the recordings to the pictures
- call on SS to give the answers
- have SS listen again and go over the answers with the class.
Activity 2: Multiple-choice questions ( task b, p. 154-155)
-Have SS read through the questions to know what they need to look for.
- Have SS listen to the recordings and do the exercises
- call on SS to give the answers
- elicit class opinions.
- have SS listen again and check the answers with the class

 Speaking : role play.
- Put SS into pairs, A: a journalist, B: one member of the organizing committee.
- Ask SS to conduct an interview on what has happened, based on the information from the recordings.
- move round giving help where needed.
- call on some pairs to act out their interviews.
- invite class opinions and give feed back.
Gap-filling ( handouts)
- give each student a copy of the task below to do at home.
- fill each the gap with the correct form of one of the words or phrases learnt in the vocabulary section.
